1946 French First Trade Edition 'Fleuve' by Thyde Monnier – Custom Chestnut Half-Leather Binding
For sale is a beautiful standalone mid-century French library volume titled Fleuve by the prominent 20th-century novelist Thyde Monnier. Published simultaneously in Geneva and Paris by the prestigious Éditions du Milieu du Monde in 1946, this volume represents the powerful final concluding work of her celebrated multi-generational family saga cycle, Les Desmichels. The colophon at the rear documents that this text block belongs to the authorized printing run executed on February 20, 1946, by the historic Swiss printing firm Maison Schüler S.A. in Bienne, Switzerland. This elegant octavo volume is masterfully executed in a premium custom hand-crafted chestnut/tan smooth leather half-binding over stunning "stone-fracture" marbled paper boards that present an organic palette of warm terracotta, brown, and cream. Crucially for structural longevity, the inner endpapers feature high-end leather-reinforced inner hinge strips alongside a fluid earth-toned marbled design, ensuring the heavy paper block remains perfectly anchored to the hardcovers.
Premium Bibliophile & Production Features:
- Authentic First Printing Provenance: Features the historic 1946 first edition title pages, full bibliography mapping, and the horse-and-rider publisher's emblem from their famous workshop in Geneva, paired with the Schüler S.A. colophon page at the rear.
- Premium Shelf Presence: Bound with minimal elegant gold spine rules, crisp gilt lettering, a decorative gold floral rosette stamp at the base, and classic hand-combed marbled panels. With its warm organic palette and traditional dimensions, this collectible post-WWII literary volume delivers exceptional display presence. It is perfectly suited for collectors of mid-century European literature, a Dark Academia study desk, or premium residential shelf styling projects requiring substantial, earth-toned focal books.
Condition: Presented in very good vintage condition overall. The custom hand-sewn binding remains tight, rigid, and completely sound. The chestnut leather spine displays beautifully with crisp gold leaf work and light, honest edge handling wear. Marbled boards show standard age-related surface scuffing and minor corner bumping consistent with an authentic mid-century heritage piece. Internal pages are clean, flat, and securely bound, exhibiting a lovely warm uniform cream time-toning free from severe staining or brittle damage.
