Pair of Antique French Louis XIII Style Leather Armchairs
A wonderfully characterful pair of rare antique French Louis XIII style armchairs, combining beautifully aged leather with richly turned timber frames and carvings and the strong architectural proportions so characteristic of this enduring French style.
Each chair features a broad rectangular back and generously proportioned seat upholstered in warm cognac-brown leather, secured with traditional decorative metal studding. The leather has developed the wonderful variation, softness and patina that can only come with age, giving the pair an inviting, authentic appearance without diminishing their handsome presence. Due to the age the leather has the usual surface cracks which is only mentioned for accuracy.
Particularly striking are the substantial barley-twist arms, legs and stretchers. The scrolling twist work is complemented by carved hand terminals to the arms — a delightful detail that gives these chairs considerably more personality than plainer examples of the style. The brass feet look beautiful and at some stage they had been replaced.
The timber has a rich, warm tone that sits beautifully alongside the aged brown leather, while the joined lower stretchers give the chairs the robust, grounded appearance associated with Louis XIII furniture.
Although substantial in appearance, at just 59 cm wide these are particularly useful antique armchairs. They could sit comfortably either side of a fireplace, in a library or study, beside a console in an entrance hall, or as occasional chairs in a contemporary interior where their sculptural form would provide wonderful contrast.
Offered as a pair, they have all the warmth and individuality we look for in genuine antique French furniture — decorative without being overly formal and with an aged finish that should not be mistaken for the uniform appearance of modern reproduction furniture.
