An Antique French Henri II Walnut Glazed Bibliothèque Bookcase – 19th Century
A beautifully proportioned antique French glazed bookcase or bibliothèque, dating from the late 19th century and crafted in richly toned walnut.
The bookcase has a wonderfully architectural appearance, with a substantial moulded cornice above a finely detailed frieze and a pair of tall glazed doors. Elegant turned and fluted columns flank the façade, while carved rosettes, geometric mouldings and raised panelled sections provide the restrained decorative detail characteristic of French Henri II and Renaissance Revival furniture of the period.
The two large glazed doors retain their traditional gathered fabric curtaining, giving the piece a softer and more decorative appearance while concealing the contents when desired. The lower sections of the doors feature handsome raised geometric panels with applied roundels.
The walnut has developed a rich, warm patina, with attractive variations in colour and grain that could only be achieved through age. Original-style escutcheons and key hardware further enhance its authentic period character.
A substantial yet elegant piece, this bibliothèque would make a striking addition to a French Provincial, traditional or contemporary interior. It would be equally beautiful used as a traditional bookcase, display cabinet, linen cupboard or for storing a collection of treasured objects.
