A rare and magnificent antique French wedding armoire from Brittany with the date brass studded at the top ‘1855’. The solid hand hewn oak has intricate all over carvings and brass studs. Wedding armoires were typically carved with very meaningful symbols of luck and love, hence the love birds. Marriage armoires were usually hand crafted and richly carved by a father for his daughter's trousseau.
We can only just imagine the rich history this old lady would hold. There have been old repairs to the legs due to borer damage and there are other areas of old borer damage and holes (which are of no concern as all our pieces are treated by government regulation upon arrival from France). This is a very old armoire and it is not a pristine piece but is for lovers of genuine French rustic country antiques. The lock does not work and the key has long gone. The low asking price is not indicative of the real value of this armoire.
SIZE approx: 205 cm high, 132.5 cm wide, 66 cm deep, 73 cm deep at the pelmet
