Antique French Provincial Louis Style Oak Armoire with Domed Bonnet Top – c. 1880 – G080
Now available at our Seaford warehouse.
A beautifully proportioned antique French oak armoire, featuring an elegant domed bonnet top, wonderful warm timber tones and the understated detailing so characteristic of French Provincial furniture.
Standing an impressive 247.5 cm high, this substantial armoire has a wonderfully architectural presence. The shaped cornice rises in a graceful sweeping curve, centred by a simple carved circular medallion, while moulded detailing follows the contours of the bonnet and continues across the upper façade.
The pair of tall panelled doors are beautifully balanced, with gently shaped upper panels echoing the curves of the cornice above. The simplicity of the decoration allows the natural grain and warm honey-toned oak to become an important part of the design.
Opening the double doors reveals a wonderfully practical and spacious interior. A full-width upper shelf provides generous storage, while the large open compartment below offers excellent capacity for clothing, linen or household storage. At the base are two small internal drawers, a particularly charming and useful original-style feature.
The armoire stands on small rounded feet and retains the wonderful character expected of a genuine piece of French country furniture.
Despite its considerable size, the restrained design prevents it from appearing overly ornate. It would make a magnificent statement in a bedroom, dressing room, hallway or living area and would work equally well in a French Provincial, country, traditional or contemporary interior where a substantial antique piece is wanted for warmth and character.
Style & Origin
French Provincial / Louis XV influence
The sweeping domed or chapeau de gendarme-influenced cornice and softly curved door mouldings show the continuing influence of Louis XV provincial furniture, although the restrained decoration gives the armoire a more practical country character rather than the elaborate appearance associated with formal Parisian Louis XV furniture.
